Statement from Congressman Dan Goldman Calling on Governor Hochul to Provide Clarity on Pathway for Congestion Pricing Implementation

June 12, 2024

Washington, DC – Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) today released the following statement calling on Governor Kathy Hochul to provide clarity on the future of congestion pricing following Governor Hochul’s announcement that the implementation of congestion pricing would be postponed indefinitely.

“I have been a vocal supporter of congestion pricing because of its benefits in reducing the traffic and congestion that is stifling our city, for the environment, and for our public transit system. I remain deeply concerned that after years of delay, implementation of congestion pricing is yet again being postponed with no clear explanation or understanding of what must be accomplished in order to implement this important policy.

“In announcing the pause, Governor Hochul pointed to concerns about economic conditions and the impact on businesses in the Central Business District. Yet, the overwhelming majority of working-class commuters rely on our mass transit system, and they will be the primary beneficiaries of congestion pricing.

“So as to not endanger the already-budgeted MTA capital plan, the half a billion dollars already spent on congestion pricing infrastructure, and the billions of dollars in federal grant money that was awarded to New York City pursuant to congestion pricing’s implementation, it is important that New Yorkers have greater clarity about the Governor’s abrupt decision and what economic metrics are driving this decision.

“Today, I call on Governor Hochul to provide clarity around the particular economic indicators she’s relying upon, and, more importantly, what progress must be achieved before congestion pricing gets the green light once and for all. I remain committed to ensuring congestion pricing moves forward and ask that the Governor provide a clear roadmap for how she plans to get us there.”
