Statement from Congressman Goldman Following Judge Cannon’s Decision to Dismiss Donald Trump’s Classified Documents Case

July 15, 2024

New York, NY – Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) today released the following statement on Judge Aileen Cannon’s decision to dismiss Special Counsel Jack Smith’s prosecution against former President Donald Trump.

“Echoing the corrupt and conflicted Justice Clarence Thomas’ concurrence in Trump v. United States, a Trump-appointed judge’s decision to dismiss Donald Trump's classified documents case on the basis that Special Counsel Jack Smith's appointment was unconstitutional is a gross miscarriage of justice that flies in the face of Supreme Court precedent and common sense.

“Judge Cannon is no doubt well aware that the Supreme Court has upheld Special Counsel appointments time and time again. After the Trump-packed Supreme Court handed him immunity for all conduct during his presidency, another Trump appointee has manufactured immunity for him for conduct following his presidency.

“This is the stuff of a banana republic, not a democracy. Americans will have a clear choice to make on November 5: a wannabe dictator (Trump) or a democratic statesman (Biden).”
