Congressman Dan Goldman Assists East Village NYCHA Residents With Broken Mailboxes

Seniors Had Been Forced to Walk Blocks in Frigid Weather to Receive Mail at Post Office

Lack of Mail Access Hindered Receipt of Social Security and Medical Documentation

Follows Introduction of Public Housing Emergency Response Act to Bring $32 Billion to NYCHA for Capital Repairs

New York, NY – Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) announced that last week his constituent services team was able to assist in fixing an issue that prevented residents of the Campos Plaza II New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) development in the East Village from accessing their mailboxes. After coordinating between NYCHA, USPS and the 612 East 14th Street building, Goldman’s team was able to push the process of repairing an “arrow lock” to the complexes mailboxes so that residents are once again able to access mail in their apartments.

“We have an obligation to ensure that public housing residents are living with the dignity and respect they deserve, and expecting tenants to walk blocks in the dead of winter to pick up their mail does not meet that standard,” Congressman Dan Goldman said. “The most important part of this job is ensuring that my office is doing everything in its power to deliver for the residents of NY-10 on issues big and small, and I am incredibly proud that my team in the District Office was able to quickly and comprehensively coordinate with the relevant government agencies to remedy this unacceptable situation.”

Campos Plaza II Tenant Association President Christine Bookin said, “Thank you to Congress Member Dan Goldman and his team for helping to secure the safety of our mail room at Campos Plaza II. My neighbors and I rely on the mail to get important information to our families. I look forward to working with the Congress Member to address the many needs of my neighbors.”

Earlier in the year, Goldman’s office was notified that the residents of the Campos Plaza II development, including seniors, were unable to access their mailboxes in the building and had to travel multiple blocks to pick up their mail at the Stuyvesant post office in the middle of winter. The mailboxes needed a new ‘arrow lock’ from USPS. The lack of access to mail made it difficult for residents to receive their social security benefit verification letters as well as medical documentation.

Goldman’s office coordinated with local elected partners, NYCHA and USPS to fix issues in one of the development's 17-floor buildings so that senior residents can once again access their mail without having to brave the elements to go to the post office.

Earlier this year, Congressman Dan Goldman and Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez (NY-07) introduced the Public Housing Emergency Response Act which would allocate $70 billion in funding for public housing capital repairs and upgrades throughout the country. $32 billion of the allotted aid would be expected to flow directly to NYCHA, the nation’s largest Public Housing Authority.
