New York, NY – Kicking off Small Business Week, Congressman Dan Goldman convened a virtual roundtable discussion to provide resources for small business owners, discuss the Inflation Reduction Act’s impact on small businesses, and answer questions from business owners on how the office and agencies can support them. The Congressman was joined by Troy Diaz, Lead Lender Relations Specialist for the Small Business Administration New York District Office; Haris Khan, Deputy Chief of Staff and Director of Intergovernmental Affairs for the New York City Department of Small Business Services; Andrew Flamm, Regional Director of the Pace University Small Business Development Center; and Matt Salton, Federal Campaigns Manager for the New York League of Conservation Voters.

“Small businesses are the backbone of our communities and are vital to making New York the best city in the world,” Congressman Dan Goldman said. “Supporting the small business owners who invest in our neighborhoods must be a top priority. From federal programs administered through the Small Business Administration to city agencies and local organizations ready to help navigate difficult times, small businesses should take full advantage of the plethora of resources, grants, loans, and services offered by all of the fantastic agencies and groups that joined my roundtable discussion today. All levels of government and countless organizations in our district stand at the ready to help small businesses and their owners thrive.”

Troy Diaz, Lead Lender Relations Specialist from the SBA New York District Office said, “Connecting regularly with small businesses is vital to ensuring entrepreneurs have the support they need. Thanks to Congressman Dan Goldman and his team for coordinating this fantastic webinar round table."

NYC Department of Small Business Services Commissioner Kevin D. Kim said, "I want to thank Congressman Dan Goldman and his team for organizing this incredible small business roundtable. Community conversations like this are crucial to connecting even more small businesses and entrepreneurs with free city and federal resources they need to thrive. SBS is excited to continue working with Congressman Goldman and all of our allies in Washington as we work together to make New York the City of Yes for small business."

Pace University Small Business Development Center Regional Director Andrew Flamm said, “Thanks to Congressman Dan Goldman for his tireless advocacy for NYC small businesses, and for pulling together this terrific small business roundtable to kick off National Small Business Week. We appreciate the opportunity to join the U.S. Small Business Administration, the NYC Department of Small Business Services and League of Conservation Voters on this engaging panel, and to highlight the NYSBDC’s one-to-one business advisory services and training programs, all offered at no cost to our small business clients.”

Matt Salton, Federal Campaigns Manager for the New York League of Conservation Voters said, “We were glad to join Rep. Goldman to highlight how small businesses can take advantage of the benefits in the Inflation Reduction Act. From the grants and tax credits that are available now to the rebates that will soon be available, the IRA is paving the way for businesses, nonprofits, governments, and individuals to make their spaces more energy efficient.”

Following presentations from attending organizations on the resources available to New York City small businesses, the Congressman led a discussion with business owners from across his district regarding the challenges they face. Small business loan relief emerged as a central issue challenging businesses in NY-10, as well as the rise in malicious ‘Americans with Disabilities Act’ compliance suits, and the need for help navigating small business permitting and licensing rules.

The participants also discussed how Democrats’ ‘Inflation Reduction Act’ is already lowering costs for small businesses in New York by maintaining lower healthcare costs, supporting energy-saving investments, and bolstering supply chain resiliency. The ‘Inflation Reduction Act’ extended the ‘Affordable Care Act’s’ tax credits forhealth insurance, which lowered insurance premiums for the 2.6 million small business owners and self-employed adults who depend on the ACA marketplace. Small business owners and self-employed people make up 25 percent of Marketplace enrollment among working-age adults.

Additionally, the ‘Inflation Reduction Act’ includes several provisions that defray the costs for small businesses investing in renewable energy sources like solar, or who buy electric commercial vehicles. By making it cheaper for small business owners to invest in the green economy, Democrats are simultaneously lowering costs for small businesses while advancing climate change goals.
