Washington, DC – Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) today joined Congresswoman Haley Stevens (MI-11) in introducing a resolution demanding Hamas release the hostages they are holding in Gaza and condemning the terrorist organization for committing war crimes against civilians. Since the October 7, 2023, Hamas terrorist attack against Israel, Hamas has abducted and is holding roughly 200 people as hostages including infants and children.
“Last week’s horrific terror attack on Shabbat and Simchat Torah was one of the worst terrorist attacks in history, with Hamas raping, torturing, murdering and wounding thousands of innocent civilians while committing atrocious war crimes,” Congressman Dan Goldman said. “Hamas is a brutal terrorist organization that also abducted and kidnapped approximately 200 innocent civilians, including Americans, who are now held hostage in Gaza without contact with their families or the International Red Cross as required by international law. Our number one priority must remain the immediate, safe return of these hostages from Hamas.”
This resolution would:
Condemn Hamas for its brutal attack on Israel;
Condemn Hamas for the taking of hostages;
Condemn Hamas for threats made against hostages;
Demand that Hamas immediately release all hostages and return them to safety; and
Recognize that the taking of hostages is a violation of international humanitarian law; and
Express sympathy to the hostages, wounded, deceased, and their families for this travesty to justice and personal hardship.
Common Article 3 of the 1949 Geneva Conventions states that the taking of hostages is and shall remain prohibited at any time and in any place whatsoever.
