Washington, DC – Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) joined Senator Tina Smith (D-MN) and Congresswoman Cori Bush (MO-01) in introducing the ‘Protecting Access to Medication Abortion Act.’ This legislation would protect the right to obtain medication abortion through telehealth and certified pharmacies—which include mail-order pharmacies. Medication abortion stands on the frontlines of the fight to protect abortion access nationwide in a post Roe v. Wade environment.
In 2000, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of the medication abortion drug, mifepristone. In light of Republican attacks on abortion access, the Protecting Access to Medication Abortion Act would codify elements of Roe v. Wade by ensuring safe, legal access to this form of reproductive healthcare.
“By overturning Roe v. Wade, this extremist Supreme Court ripped away a fundamental right from the first time in history and took control over women’s reproductive rights,” Congressman Dan Goldman said. “Medication abortion is safe, it is effective, and it is healthcare. Partisan politicians have absolutely no place standing in the middle of a woman, her doctor, and the decision to get an abortion. There is a war being waged on women in State Legislatures across the country and it is incumbent upon us to protect the right to an abortion for all women, in every state, in every way that we can and that includes ensuring that medication abortion is available throughout the United States.”
Throughout his time in Congress, Congressman Goldman has fought to defend abortion rights and access, including access to medication abortion. In June, Congressman Goldman and Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-28) led their colleagues in urging retail pharmacies to obtain the certification required to dispense mifepristone.
Earlier this year, Congressman Goldman also helped to introduce the Women’s Health Protection Act to fully codify Roe v. Wade. In March Congressman Goldman cosponsored of the Ensuring Women’s Right to Reproductive Freedom Act which would prohibit any person acting under state law, from punishing or restricting Americans traveling for reproductive health care.
