Congressman Dan Goldman Joins Coalition to Address Climate Change and Fight For Environmental Justice
Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition Formed to Promote Clean Energy Innovation, Develop Renewable Energy Resources, Create Good-Paying Clean Jobs
Advance Polices to Address Climate Change, Fight for Environmental Justice, Protect Clean Air and Water
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) joined the U.S. House of Representatives Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition (SEEC). The SEEC was founded in January 2009, at the start of the 111th Congress, to be a focused, active, and effective advocate for policies for clean energy innovation and job creation, environmental protection, and policies that will address global climate change.
“I am proud to join the House Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition in the fight for environmental justice and a comprehensive and equitable green energy transition,” Congressman Dan Goldman said. “Climate change is no longer a concern for the future — it is here, wreaking havoc around the country, including in my district in New York City. I look forward to joining with my SEEC colleagues to fight for the necessary investment in a green future that meets the urgency of this moment.”
SEEC remains committed to advancing policies that support clean energy innovation, address climate change, protect our natural environment and promote environmental justice.
SEEC Co-Chairs Reps. Doris Matsui, Mike Quigley, and Paul Tonko said, “We are very pleased to welcome Rep. Dan Goldman to SEEC. Rep. Goldman’s district experienced the devastating effects of the climate crisis firsthand when Superstorm Sandy directly hit Manhattan. Rep. Goldman has already shown a clear commitment to ensuring the environmental resiliency of the communities in his district so the destructive toll of that storm is never experienced again. As he represents one of the densest areas in the country, we also are eager to learn from him what it will take to decarbonize our major urban areas. We expect Rep. Goldman will be a critical voice in our collective mission to create a clean economy and tackle the climate crisis.”
Last Congress, the coalition introduced its Sustainable Infrastructure Proposal and has continued to call for an infrastructure bill that takes bold steps to address climate change. SEEC continues to work with Committee partners, House Leadership, and partners in the U.S. Senate to encourage proactive climate and sustainable environmental policies across the Congressional Agenda.
Through its advocacy efforts, SEEC has seen increased funding for clean energy programs at the Department of Energy and the inclusion of water sustainability policy in the 2018 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). It also successfully opposed anti-environmental riders in the 2018 Farm Bill and focused early attention on the dangerous health consequences of former President Trump’s Clean Power Plan replacement.
SEEC members remain dedicated to the coalition's mission and to advancing policies for a more prosperous, sustainable, and secure future for our country.
In January, Goldman offered the Green Equity Amendment to the House Republicans’ Strategic Production Response Act which would kill that bill’s attempted giveaway to Big Oil and instead require that in order to release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, the Executive Branch must first certify to Congress that 1) the United States is meeting the Paris Climate Accords targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and 2) the recommendations of the Justice40 Initiative that calls for 40 percent of the overall benefits of federal investments flow to disadvantaged communities that are marginalized, underserved, and overburdened by pollution are being met.
At the State of the Union address, Goldman will be wearing a Climate Action Campaign “warming stripes” pin to highlight the climate crisis and the urgent need for the United States to enact strong federal pollution standards to meet President Biden’s commitment to cut climate pollution by half by 2030.
The pin is a visualization of the global temperature rise from 1850 to 2018. Each stripe represents the temperature for a year and graphically demonstrates the striking rise in temperature that exacerbates climate change and threatens our health and economy.
