Congressman Goldman Requested U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Expedite Travel Request
22 Dreamers Receive Once-in-a-Lifetime Global Educational Opportunity
Brooklyn, NY – Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) last month secured approval from the U.S. Citizens and Immigration Services (USCIS) for 22 DACA Recipients (Dreamers) to attend a study abroad program in Mexico. The students were participating in the “Jornada Binacional: Lenguas e Identidades” (Binational Conference: Languages and Identities), an educational and humanitarian opportunity organized by Mixteca Inc, an immigrant assistance organization located in New York’s 10th Congressional District. The program requires students to travel to Mexico for one week.
Following Congressman Goldman’s request that USCIS expeditiously review and consider the emergency advance parole request of 22 Dreamers, USCIS approved the travel, and the 22 students were able to travel to Mexico and obtain a global cultural education.
“I am incredibly proud that my office was able to help these students expand their education and experience a unique global and humanitarian program in Mexico,” Congressman Dan Goldman said. “Our young people should have the opportunity to enrich their education through academic and cultural study abroad programs, regardless of their immigration status. I am glad to see that these 22 college students were able to participate in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and am committed to ensuring that every student can access these elevated educational experiences.”
Lorena Kourousias, Executive Director of Mixteca said,"Thank you, Congressman Goldman, for using your voice and leadership to help secure advance parole for 21 dreamers, and for standing up for justice, fairness, compassion, and opportunity. Your efforts have made a significant difference not only in the lives of our dreamers but in our community and beyond."
The students were able to attend their study abroad program in March, connecting with other Dreamers who currently reside in Mexico and shared invaluable experiences that will contribute to both the United States and Mexico. They also visited the National Library of Mexico, as well as Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México – UNAM, met with dignitaries at significant historical sites, and had the opportunity to reconnect with family.
