February 1, 2023

Specialized Skills and Experience Highly Relevant to Expected Focus of ‘Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government’

GOP Overreach and Politicized Investigations Expected to Flow Through Select Subcommittee

Goldman Will Help Democrats Effectively Counter Republican Messaging and Lack of Substance

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) was today tapped to serve on the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government – or the “GOP Subcommittee to Obstruct Justice” as the Congressman aptly named it – as a bulwark against Republican overreach and politicized investigations designed to undermine President Biden and Democrats.

“The Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government – or more aptly named the GOP Subcommittee to Obstruct Justice – will operate as simply another vehicle for the Republicans’ attacks on our democracy and efforts to interfere with ongoing criminal investigations,” Congressman Dan Goldman said. “I look forward to using my experience directly relevant to the focus of the Subcommittee to serve as a bulwark against Republican overreach and politicized investigations. We Democrats will not only counter the extremism and expose the hypocrisy of the Republicans, but we will also work to restore faith in the rule of law and our democratic foundations.”

The Select Subcommittee will be overseen by Congressman Jim Jordan, who has called Goldman a “worthy adversary” from their experience on opposite sides of former President Donald Trump’s first impeachment inquiry.

The Subcommittee will have access to information shared with the House Intelligence Committee and members will have broad investigatory powers, with the potential to interfere in ongoing criminal investigations led by the Department of Justice.

Goldman’s specialized skills and experience are directly relevant to the expected focus of the Select Subcommittee in the 118th Congress will help Democrats effectively counter Republicans, both substantively and through targeted messaging.

In 2019, Goldman served as Director of Investigations and Senior Advisor to the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. In that role, he oversaw the House’s investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election, including negotiating with the Department of Justice regarding access to the Mueller Report and its underlying documents, as well as for testimony from Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

He then served as lead counsel for the impeachment investigation of President Donald J. Trump for abusing his office for his personal interest regarding Ukraine. In that role, he worked hand-in-glove with Chairman Adam Schiff to guide the investigation, led depositions and questioned witnesses in public hearings, testified before the Judiciary Committee, and worked as lead counsel to the Impeachment Managers for the Senate trial.

With a decade of experience as a federal prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, years of experience as a legal analyst on television, as well as congressional experience serving as the Director of Investigations and Senior Advisor to the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, Goldman is uniquely qualified to lead the Democrats’ response to partisan overreach and misinformation that will undoubtedly define the Subcommittee’s work.
