Washington, D.C. – Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) joined Congressman Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) and other colleagues in introducing the ‘Protecting Sensitive Locations Act,’ which would prohibit immigration enforcement, including arrests, interviews, searches, and surveillance, at "sensitive locations," including medical or health care facilities, public and private schools, places of worship, courthouses, DMV offices, and locations that provide emergency services.
“Allowing ICE to raid school parking lots or Sunday church services isn’t about making our communities safer – it’s about sowing fear in immigrant communities and forcing immigrants who are here lawfully to go into hiding,” Congressman Dan Goldman said. “Nobody should have to miss school or forgo medical treatment due to the threat of an ICE raid. As President Trump continues to attack immigrant families, it is more important than ever that we stand up for due process and ensure all New Yorkers can obtain critical social services free from fear.”
The ‘Protecting Sensitive Locations Act’ specifically would prohibit immigration enforcement actions within 1,000 feet of a sensitive location unless there are exigent circumstances and written prior approval has been obtained from certain officials. The list of “sensitive locations” for immigrant communities that this bill would protect includes:
- Medical treatment facilities and health care facilities of all types;
- Public and private schools, early childhood learning centers, preschools, scholastic activities, and field trips;
- Places of worship;
- Federal and local courthouses;
- DMVs and social security offices;
- Polling places; labor union halls;
- Rape crisis centers, food banks, and homeless shelters
Congressman Goldman is committed to fighting for policies that protect and uplift our immigrant communities.
Earlier this year, the Congressman hosted a ‘Know Your Rights’ seminar with the New York Immigration Coalition to ensure immigrants and their loved ones are prepared when encountering law enforcement officials.
In July 2024, the Congressman co-sponsored the ‘America’s CHILDREN Act,’ which would provide lawful permanent resident status for certain college graduates who entered the United States as children and were dependents of individuals with work visas. This bill aims to provide legal protections to children who, because they have maintained a legal status throughout their lives, are ineligible for protections from the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
In November 2023, Congressman Goldman cosponsored the ‘Children’s Court Act’ to combat the immigration court backlog and strengthen due process rights for children. The legislation would establish a Children’s Court within the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) focused on the adjudication of unaccompanied children’s removal proceedings.
