Washington, D.C. – Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) joined Rep. Suzanne Bonamici (OR-1) and 71 of his Democratic colleagues in introducing a resolution that advocates for protecting local public schools and condemns any attempt to defund public education.
“Access to a quality, affordable education is the cornerstone of our nation's success and the driving force behind economic mobility and achieving the American Dream,” Congressman Dan Goldman said. “It is a moral, economic, and national security imperative to ensure that every child in America can receive the quality and affordable education they need to succeed. As the Trump Administration and Elon Musk attack the foundations of our nation’s education system, Democrats are ironclad in our commitment to the millions of teachers, administrators, and parents that are dedicated to giving every student a fair shot at success.”
The resolution counters the radical and harmful ideas proposed by Project 2025 and the Trump Administration’s recent Executive Orders. The resolution:
- Highlights the historical role of the federal government in public education to promote equity of access for all students regardless of background or ability
- Recognizes that publicly funded local schools are often the only option for students in rural areas and students with disabilities
- Identifies the number of students served by major programs administered by the Department of Education, such as ESEA Title I funding and IDEA
- Emphasizes the importance of the Office of Civil Rights in enforcing federal laws prohibiting discrimination and harassment, especially under Title IX
- Supports maintained federal investment in public schools, affirms the importance of the Department of Education, and condemns any executive or congressional actions that would weaken or dismantle the Department or otherwise reduce or redirect funding for public education, including voucher programs.
Congressman Dan Goldman has made safeguarding and strengthening the American education system a central focus of his time in office.
In Summer 2024, Goldman joined colleagues in introducing the ‘Expanding Access to Mental Health Services in Schools Act’ to address the urgent need for mental health professionals in schools. The bill would increase the number of mental health service providers in schools, particularly in high-need areas, by providing competitive grants to local educational agencies for recruitment, hiring, retention, and diversification of mental health service providers.
Last Congress Goldman introduced the ‘Codifying SAVE Plan Act’ to protect the Biden Administration's Student Loan Repayment Plan from rollbacks by future presidents.
In Winter 2023, Goldman joined Congresswoman Sara Jacobs (CA-51) in introducing the ‘GRADUATE Act’ which would allow borrowers to deduct up to $10,000 in student loan payments from taxes.
