Congressman Dan Goldman’s “Early Voting Act” Included in Seminal House Voting Rights Bill Package “Freedom To Vote Act"
Voting Rights Omnibus Bill ‘Freedom to Vote Act’ Introduced by House Task Force on Strengthening Democracy Includes Goldman’s ‘Early Voting Act'
‘Early Voting Act’ Would Ensure 14 Days of In-Person Early Voting for Federal Elections
Washington D.C. - Congressman Dan Goldman today joined the House Task Force on Strengthening Democracy in introducing ‘Freedom to Vote Act,’ the House’s marquee voting rights legislative package which includes Goldman’s ‘Early Voting Act’ that he introduced as a standalone bill in February. The ‘Freedom to Vote Act’ includes vital reforms to our electoral process, including Congressman Goldman’s ‘Early Voting Act’ which would require at least 14 days of in-person early voting and make election officials maximize polling place accessibility to combat unacceptable delays for voters waiting in line to cast their ballots. The Congressman’s bill also mandates that election officials start processing and scanning ballots at least 14 days prior to Election Day in order to combat the spread of misinformation by accelerating race calling.
“Voting rights across the nation are under attack from anti-democratic extremists and those who prefer that elections are decided by politicians, not voters,” Congressman Dan Goldman said. “I am proud that a bill as critically important as the Freedom to Vote Act to the future of our democracy includes the Early Voting Act that I introduced upon first entering Congress. This bill will require that localities take critically important steps for all federal elections to increase access to the ballot box and protect against the spread of election conspiracy theories. The fundamental right of one person one vote is at the very foundation of our democracy, and we must meet the urgency of the moment with legislative action, not just words.”
Congressman Goldman’s provisions are a key part of this expansive bill, which is supported by a broad, non-partisan coalition of over 170 organizations leading in the civil rights, voting rights, and good government space.
The Freedom to Vote Act would expand automatic voter registration and same day registration, protect elections from foreign interference, address partisan gerrymandering, and empower small donors with a matching funds program funded with proceeds from lawbreakers.
In addition to the components of the bill from Congressman Goldman’s Early Voting Act, the Freedom to Vote Act also forces the disclosure of dark money and promotes transparency in digital ad spending.
