Congressmen Robert Garcia, Dan Goldman Move to Force a Vote on Resolution to Expel George Santos from House of Representatives

November 28, 2023

Washington, DC – Congressman Robert Garcia (CA-42) and Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) today called up their previous resolution to expel Congressman George Santos (NY-03) from Congress as a privileged resolution, forcing House Republican leadership to schedule a vote on his expulsion within 48 hours. This resolution follows the conclusion of the House Ethics Committee’s investigation and subsequent release of their report, which concluded that George Santos defrauded his donors, filed false FEC reports, and repeatedly broke the law in order to fraudulently win his election last November.

Congressman Garcia and Congressman Goldman had originally introduced their resolutions to expel Santos in February and August respectively – House Republicans overwhelmingly voted to refer the resolutions back to the House Ethics Committee in their efforts to protect Santos from expulsion.

Congressman Robert Garcia said, “The time has finally come to remove George Santos from Congress. If we’re going to restore faith in government, we must start with restoring integrity in the U.S. House of Representatives. It is essential for the American people to have Representatives they can trust and who don’t build their careers on deceit and falsehoods. We have once again forced an expulsion vote on the House floor because enough is enough.”

“George Santos is an admitted liar, fraud, and cheat, and the recent Ethics Committee report confirms what we’ve long known: George Santos is wholly unfit for public office," Congressman Dan Goldman said. “Today, I am once again calling for him to be expelled from Congress, as I have since the first day his lies were uncovered. Republicans no longer have any fictional excuse to protect Santos in order to preserve their narrow majority – to continue to do so would be a disgrace to the institution. It is time for the people of NY-03 to have real representation, and that starts with the immediate removal of George Santos.”

Since early this year, Congressmen Garcia and Goldman have led the charge in calling for accountability for Santos’ numerous ethics violations.

At the start of the 118th Congress, Congressman Goldman and Congressman Torres filed the original complaint with the House Committee on Ethics calling for an investigation into Congressman Santos in January for violating the Ethics in Government Act by failing to file timely, accurate, and complete financial disclosure reports as required by law.

Additionally, Congressman Goldman and Congressman Torres introduced the ‘SANTOS Act’ to require that candidates for Congress file additional biographical information with the Federal Elections Commission. Knowingly and willfully providing false information would be punishable by a fine, prison, or both.

In June, Congressman Goldman demanded an update on the House Ethics Committee’s interim findings in their investigation.
