Brooklyn, NY – Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) led a walking tour of the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal in April to tout the role that Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) tax credits played in making Brooklyn the future offshore wind capital of America. The South Brooklyn Marine Terminal, still in its pre-construction phase, will connect the Empire Wind 1 wind farm’s clean energy capacity to the New York City grid. Empire Wind 1 will be the first offshore wind project to plug directly into the New York City power gird and will ultimately connect its renewable energy at the neighboring Gowanus substation. The South Brooklyn Marine Terminal will also be the largest port dedicated to offshore wind staging and Operations and Maintenance in the United States.
With a generative capacity of over 800 megawatts, nearly 700 megawatts more than South Fork wind farm, Empire Wind 1 will be critical in helping New York reach its goal of providing one-third of the country’s offshore wind power by 2035. This historic project was made possible by investments and tax credits from the Inflation Reduction Act passed by Congressional Democrats and championed by President Biden in 2022.

The South Brooklyn Marine Terminal will be the largest port dedicated to offshore wind staging and maintenance in the United States, according to Congress Member Dan Goldman, who says he has never been more optimistic about New York’s future as “the offshore wind capital of America.”
“Our commitment to offshore wind in New York is a bet on our future — an investment in cleaner air for our kids, better jobs for our communities, and a new paradigm of energy independence that will end our reliance on the whims of America’s geopolitical rivals,” Goldman said in a statement Tuesday.”

Rep. Dan Goldman toured the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal on Friday to see the land at the heart of New York’s offshore wind ambitions and pitch the benefits to the industry of tax credits in the Inflation Reduction Act. In an interview, Goldman, a Democrat, pitched the offshore wind industry as a bipartisan issue.
“I, frankly, would be shocked if there’s even a new administration that they would roll back these opportunities,” he said, “especially when my Republican colleagues like to talk so much about energy independence. There’s no better way to have energy independence than to create our own energy here in this country that does not depend on the whims of adversaries in Iran, Russia or China.”
