NEW YORK, NY — Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) hosted a press conference today condemning the militarized Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid on Canal Street in Lower Manhattan, during which four U.S. citizens were unlawfully detained and later released following intervention from his office. He was joined by Murad Awawdeh, President and CEO of the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC).
“Yesterday’s military-style raid on Canal Street was an outrageous and unnecessary abuse of power,” Congressman Dan Goldman said. “Dozens of masked federal agents stormed Lower Manhattan, roughing up protestors and indiscriminately arresting people — including four U.S. citizens. After my office intervened, all four were released without charges, but their freedom should never have depended on congressional action. The Trump administration is openly threatening to expand these lawless tactics in New York City, and we must stay vigilant. I am demanding a full accounting of the events that led up to this unlawful raid, and my office is now building a Rapid Response Task Force so the next time ICE tries to terrorize our neighborhoods, New Yorkers won’t face it alone.”
Senator Schumer said, “The raid in lower Manhattan yesterday was indiscriminate, wrong and destructive. Reckless raids by federal authorities on our city’s streets are unwanted and unwarranted. They create fear and chaos, lead to avoidable provocation and do not make us safer.”
Congresswoman Grace Meng said, “ICE showed up in Chinatown yesterday dressed for war, not community safety. Hardworking families were terrified. Communities were thrown into chaos. This isn’t law enforcement; it’s a federal overreach.”
Congressman Gregory W. Meeks said, “The ICE raid on Canal Street on Tuesday was another reckless and violent overreach by the Trump administration. Federal agents engaged in unlawful questioning and detained individuals without cause, including U.S. citizens. These actions represent a disturbing abuse of power and a clear violation of civil rights. No person in America should ever be subjected to illegal detention, intimidation, or profiling by their own government.”
Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke said, "On seemingly nothing more than a radical-right influencer's instructions, New York City tragically faced a reality yesterday that too many other communities across our nation have known since Donald Trump took power: ICE goons descending upon our streets, bringing the same chaos, violence, and pain that follows them everywhere they go. Our city is defined by the solidarity and compassion our neighbors share among one another. The havoc New Yorkers have been accused of harboring is, at every level, a lie. But of course, the orchestrators of this attack on Canal Street know that. In the absence of the disorder that the president’s false narratives rely upon, this administration and its goons are hellbent on creating their own by any means necessary. We see their endgame. We know they will fail. No matter what these thugs and their masters might have to say about it, New York City will always be a sanctuary to the oppressed and powerless. Our doors will always be open to those seeking refuge and safety. And they will always be closed to Donald Trump and his agents of hatred.”
With the Trump administration vowing to increase ICE operations throughout New York City, Goldman outlined the creation of a ‘Rapid Response Taskforce’ to coordinate with other elected officials, local organizations, and others to assist New Yorkers during future federal enforcement actions in NY-10.
Under current regulations, ICE may not assert civil immigration enforcement authority to detain U.S. citizens. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), a component of ICE, may detain citizens only in the narrow circumstance of a criminal arrest based on probable cause — such as obstruction or assault on a federal officer.
