NEW YORK, N.Y. – Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) convened a roundtable with Assembly Member Harvey Epstein, State Senator Brian Kavanagh and leaders from across the Lower East Side and East Village today to discuss community priorities, share updates on ongoing legislative work, and identify new opportunities for collaboration.
The discussion brought together directors, advocates, and organizers from key community organizations, including the Loisaida Center, Henry Street Settlement, LES Girls Club, Dorill Initiative, Grand St Settlement, East Village Community Coalition, Avenues for Justice, Education Alliance, and local education advocates.
“The east side of lower Manhattan spans dynamic and diverse neighborhoods, and the challenges it faces require persistent advocacy from coalitions that span the many government and nonprofit public servants across the community,” Congressman Dan Goldman said. “Bringing leaders together in one room ensures that we can coordinate our efforts, address urgent needs like housing, food security, education, and climate resiliency, and deliver results for our community.”
Participants highlighted pressing concerns such as:
- Housing and affordability – including NYCHA repairs and Section 8 access
- Food insecurity – protecting and expanding SNAP benefits
- Immigration services and support
- Environmental health and resiliency – addressing air quality and waterfront protection
- Public education support – ensuring resources for neighborhood schools
Congressman Goldman has worked across all levels of government to boost affordable housing construction, lower the cost of living, and protect New Yorkers from the effects of the Trump administration’s damaging policies.
Last week, Goldman hosted a Section 8 & 9 townhall at Grand St. Settlement to discuss how the Trump administration’s policies are affecting Section 8 and 9 housing in New York and help inform tenants on how city and state housing agencies may be impacted. The Congressman was joined by representatives from the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), New York City Housing Preservation and Development, and New York State Homes and Community Renewal.
Last month, Congressman Goldman joined a lawsuit with 11 other members of Congress against the Trump administration for illegally barring their access to ICE detention facilities, which members of Congress have the statutory and constitutional authority to do.
Last week, Goldman hosted a press conference alongside 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, the Chinese American Planning Council, Hamilton Madison House, Henry Street Settlement, and University Settlement to condemn the food assistance cuts in the Republican Big Ugly Bill for Billionaires, as well as the impact they will have on AAPI small businesses, food banks, and New Yorkers.
