Statement from Congressman Dan Goldman Ahead of the Third Anniversary of Insurrection at the Capitol on January 6

January 5, 2024

Washington, DC – Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) today released the following statement ahead of the third anniversary of the insurrection at the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021.

“Three years ago, our democracy encountered its gravest threat since the Civil War. For the first time in more than 200 years, the United States Capitol was attacked. This time, it was not from foreign invaders but from anti-democratic extremists from within. And this attempted insurrection was executed at the behest and direction of former President Donald Trump.

“In the face of the most serious threat it has encountered, our democracy stood firm – but barely. Despite Trump’s attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election and subvert the will of the American people, our courts adhered to the rule of law and Congress certified the results of the election, allowing our democratically elected President to receive the transfer of power and assume office.

“But in many ways, January 6th was the beginning, not the end, of the attack on our fundamental democratic values. In the three years since the January 6th attack on our nation's capital, Trump-led extremists still control the Republican Party and continue their attempts to subvert our democratic institutions. From baseless accusations to evidence-free impeachment investigations, the leaders of the Republican Party have proven that they will stop at nothing to exact revenge on behalf of Donald Trump at the expense of the American people.

“We are now exactly ten months from the 2024 elections, which, once again, will put our incomparable democracy directly in the crosshairs of those who would end it completely. We must remain vigilant in the fight to preserve and protect our great country from these existential threats.

“The future of democracy depends on all of us.”
