Statement from Congressman Dan Goldman on Biden Administration Action to Lower Child Care Costs
Washington, DC – Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) today issued the following statement on the Biden Administration’s latest actions to lower child care costs for working families across New York.
Last week, Vice President Harris announced new steps the Biden Administration is taking to fight to lower the cost of childcare by strengthening the Child Care & Development Black Grant (CCDBG) program. The CCDBG program allows states to subsidize child care for low-income families that need access to such assistance. 33 percent of children in New York under the age of six are eligible for CCDBG grants. Families can save over $1,000 a month through CCDBG grants and children experiencing homeless are eligible for free childcare. The Biden Administration also announced in their proposed rulemaking that copayments for working families eligible for the CCDBG would be no more than 7 percent of a family’s income and they have encouraged states to waive copayments for families at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty level.
“I am incredibly proud to see that the Biden Administration is taking concrete steps to provide our children with the opportunity for lifelong success.
“When families have consistent, affordable access to child care and early childhood education, parents face less stress in putting food on the table and children get a head start in learning the skills they’ll need throughout their lives.
“As a father of five and founding member of the Dads Caucus, I know how vital it is for parents to have reliable access to quality child care. I look forward to supporting the Biden Administration’s work in Congress and fighting for policies that uplift working families in New York and across the country, including reinstating and expanding the Child Tax Credit.”
