Statement from Congressman Dan Goldman on Biden Administration Extending Temporary Protected Status for El Salvador, Honduras, Nepal, and Nicaragua
Washington, DC – Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) today issued the following statement after the Biden Administration announced that it would be extending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for El Salvador, Honduras, Nepal, and Nicaragua for 18 months. Last week, Congressman Goldman led a bipartisan letter, with support from union and business leaders, calling on the Biden Administration to designate or redesignate TPS for Venezuela, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
“I am encouraged by the Biden Administration’s decision, but I’m concerned that the decision did not go further to address the hundreds of thousands of newly arrived migrants escaping fear, persecution, and repression.
“The Administration’s action today importantly preserves the right of those who have been granted Temporary Protected Status to remain and gives many children the peace and comfort to know that their families will not be torn apart. But I urge the Administration to go further and designate and redesignate these countries as well as Guatemala and Venezuela for TPS so recent arrivals can come out of the shadows, work legally in an effort to provide for their families, and live up to our ideals as a nation of welcoming immigrants onto our shores.
“Last week, I led a bipartisan letter – supported by union and business leaders – that called on the Biden Administration to designate or redesignate TPS for five countries. It is not only the right and American thing to do, but it is also beneficial to our economy and businesses who desperately need more employees. This will also assist states and localities like New York City that have spent billions of dollars to shelter and provide fornew arrivals get relief from the financial obligation they have been forced to incur for a national problem.
“As the Congressional representative for the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, I am once again reiterating my call for the Biden Administration to utilize its executive authority to designate or redesignate TPS for Venezuela, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.”
