Statement from Congressman Dan Goldman on Biden Administration Redesignating Temporary Protected Status and Expedited Work Authorization for Venezuelan Migrants
Washington, DC – Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) today issued the following statement after the Biden Administration announced that it would be redesignating Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuelan migrants who came to the United States on or before July 31, 2023, as well as expediting the work authorization process for applicants. Since June of 2023, Congressman Goldman has repeatedly urged the Biden Administration — with bipartisan support — to use its executive authority to grant TPS to Venezuelan migrants and allow them to obtain lawful employment.
“I am very pleased by the Biden Administration’s decision to redesignate Temporary Protected Status to the hundreds of thousands of Venezuelan migrants who have escaped horrific conditions in their home country and sought refuge in our country of immigrants.
“In the absence of Congressional Republicans’ willingness to partner with Democrats to pass meaningful bipartisan legislation, I have been calling on the Administration to take this much needed executive action that will allow tens of thousands of newly-arrived migrants in New York City to apply for work authorization and begin to provide for themselves and their families. This will also allow them to settle in our great city, fill jobs that the business community has available, and pay taxes while alleviating the untenable financial burden on the City and State.
“I applaud President Biden and Secretary Mayorkas for taking this and other important actions today to address the pressing immigration issues facing us. As we have always done, we as New Yorkers will lead our nation in welcoming people from all over the world seeking the American Dream.
“But our work is not done. I will continue to advocate for funding and reimbursement that is commensurate to the financial burden New York City has incurred while pushing my Republican colleagues to pass legislation that can address the root causes of our situation.”
