Statement from Congressman Dan Goldman on Gun Violence Prevention Month
Washington, DC – Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) today issued the following statement to mark the end of Gun Violence Prevention Month.
“We are only halfway through the year, and already more than 21,000 people have been killed by gun violence. In just six months, the United States has had 332 mass shootings – nearly two mass shootings every single day.
“As a parent of little children who now endure active shooter drills when they hardly know what a gun is, I know that the rise in mass shootings affects every community in our country. We cannot live in a society where we send our kids off to school wondering whether they will come home.
“Republicans’ refusal to act to end the scourge of gun violence is not only a moral failure but a direct cause of the rise in gun violence. The safety of our children and our communities should not be a partisan issue, yet sadly Republicans make it so because they have put gun manufacturers and dealers over our children’s safety.
“But we will not — and cannot — stop trying. As Vice Chair of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, I implore my Republican colleagues in the House to join me in in this fight to put an end to the epidemic of gun violence with simple, evidence-based regulations.
“Legislation like Ethan’s Law to require gun owners to safely and securely store their firearms, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act to enact common-sense background check requirements, the Assault Weapons Ban to get assault weapons off our streets, and the Closing the Bump Stock Loophole Act will all help us save countless lives, including those of our children.
“Ending gun violence in America must be a top priority for every member of Congress. We owe it to our children, our families, and our communities.”
