Statement from Congressman Dan Goldman on the Indictment of Former President Donald Trump

August 1, 2023

For the third time this year, a grand jury has found probable cause to indict former President Trump. Just as he does with respect to his two previous indictments, Donald Trump has long-standing constitutional rights to a trial by jury, to confront his accusers, and to legal counsel.

“January 6 was one of the darkest days in American history. Our democracy hinges on the peaceful transfer of power and those who attempted to overthrow our government must be held accountable.

“If Donald Trump believes that the legal or factual basis for these charges is unfounded, he can make that argument to a judge, who decides the law, or a jury, which decides the facts. But this case should be litigated in the court of law, not the court of public opinion and most definitely not the halls of Congress.”
