Statement from Congressman Dan Goldman on Passage of the Further Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2024 to Fund the Federal Government
Washington, DC – Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) today released the following statement after the House of Representatives passed H.R. 2882, the ‘Further Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2024,’ the second of two funding deals needed to fund the federal government and avoid a government shutdown. This funding package includes 6 bills: Defense; Financial Services and General Government; Homeland Security; Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies; Legislative Branch; and State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs.
“Today, I joined my Democratic colleagues in providing the necessary votes to pass this bill to fund the government and avoid a disastrous government shutdown.
“In divided government, we must accept that we cannot get everything we want. But overall, this bill is a win for Democratic Party priorities for working families and small businesses, including a $1 billion increase in investment for childcare and Head Start programs and a critical $30 million funding increase for the Small Business Administration.
“We also successfully staved off disastrous funding riders that would have blocked research into the gun violence epidemic and taken power away from labor unions.
“Unfortunately, due to Republicans’ dysfunction and inability to govern, this funding package was dropped at the eleventh hour and without the ability to make amendments that would have further addressed the issues of the moment, including the migrant influx in New York City and the rise of antisemitism.
“Despite their willingness to use antisemitism in their blatantly partisan attempts to score cheap political points, Republicans cut essential funding meant to help protect places of worship, including synagogues.
“And after months of hearings where Republicans paraded witness after witness who testified that the federal government must financially assist cities such as New York that have received an influx of migrants, House Republicans also chose to cut the only program specifically designed for that purpose by nearly 20 percent.
“When I was elected, I promised to always fight for New Yorkers. After six months of Republican breakdowns, we have finally fully funded the federal government for 2024. Next year, I will continue to work for a budget that helps make our great city safe, affordable, and successful.”
