Statement From Congressman Dan Goldman On Trans Day Of Visibility
Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) today issued the following statement to mark Trans Day of Visibility.
“Today, on Trans Day of Visibility, we should be celebrating and uplifting the countless contributions Trans Americans have made and continue to make to this country.
“But the Republican Party’s relentless onslaught of bigotry towards the LGBTQIA+ community — and the trans community in particular — has underscored how far we have to go to provide equal rights for this brave community.
“This week alone, House Republicans convened a hearing on how best to weaponize their bigotry and apply it to our nation’s armed forces. Their examination of so-called ‘wokeness’ in our military was nothing more than a thinly-veiled excuse to stigmatize efforts to make the armed forces a more welcoming place for Americans of all backgrounds who wish to serve their country.
“To make matters worse, this hearing was convened on the heels of House Republicans’ Politics Over Parents Act – a bill that is nothing more than an amalgamation of ultra-conservative efforts in state legislatures across the country to punish free expression and learning. Among other things, it would require schools to categorize students by their sex assigned at birth for using school facilities and participating in activities, as well as prohibit use of preferred names or pronouns without parental permission.
“In their attacks on a community already facing higher rates of homelessness, harassment, and depression, House Republicans voted to forcibly out transgender and non-binary students, even if doing so would put them at risk of harm or child abuse.
“This week was simply the latest front of a long and expansive war on LGBTQIA+ rights. It was not the first fusillade, and it will certainly not be the last.
“On this Trans Day of Visibility, we are all called to recommit ourselves to this fight and to defending the fundamental rights of all Americans by ensuring that trans and non-binary people are guaranteed a place of safety and belonging in America.”
