Statement From Congressman Dan Goldman on the Trump Administration’s Attempt to Dismantle the Department Of Education
March 20, 2025
“President Trump’s executive order to eliminate the Department of Education is a reckless betrayal of America’s commitment to ensuring that every child, regardless of their geographical location or socioeconomic status, has the ability to access a free, high-quality public education.
“And by staying silent in acquiescence to Trump’s destructive order, the Republican Party is abandoning the 90 percent of American schoolchildren K-12 who rely on our public schools.
“Nearly 30 million students — particularly those from low-income families, students with disabilities, and children in rural communities — depend not only on the critical funding provided by the Department of Education but also the essential specialized programs utilized by millions. Trump’s plan, copy and pasted from Project 2025, would slash these essential resources, slamming the door to the American Dream for millions.
“While Trump claims this order won’t affect the Office for Civil Rights, he has already gutted nearly half of its staff and closed field offices in New York City and across the country, disrupting their essential work combating discrimination in schools and paving the way for hate — including antisemitism — to spread unchecked across our campuses.
“Dismantling the Department of Education would throw student loan and financial aid programs into disarray, putting college and vocational training out of reach for working families nationwide.
“You cannot claim to fight for working Americans while actively dismantling the very institutions that serve them. Time and again, Donald Trump makes his priorities clear, choosing his billionaire buddies over students, parents, teachers, and everyday Americans.”
