Washington, DC – Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) today commended the Biden Administration’s decision to create the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention.  This new office, overseen by Vice President Kamala Harris, will focus on implementing executive and legislative action, including the historic Bipartisan Safer Communities Act.

In April 2023, Congressman Goldman joined Congressman Maxwell Frost (FL-10) to call for the creation of a federal Office of Gun Violence Prevention.

“Comprehensively addressing the public health crisis of gun violence must be a national priority and I applaud President Biden for taking action to tackle this issue head-on by creating the Office of Gun Violence Prevention,” Congressman Goldman said. “Gun violence continues to be the leading cause of death for our kids in this country and every day more than 100 people are shot and killed. This is a national issue that will take a coordinated, national response to address. I am hopeful that with this new office, we will have a more centralized and effective effort to combat gun violence as we continue the fight to protect our communities and save countless lives.”

The first-ever National Office of Gun Violence Prevention will work to effectively implement gun safety policies as well as find additional actions the Biden Administration can take to curb the gun violence epidemic.

Since 2020, gun violence has been the leading cause of death for children in the United States, accounting for nearly 19 percent of childhood deaths. In 2020, nearly 3,600 children died in gun-related incidents. Yearly, 40,000 Americans are killed by gun violence with over 31,000 deaths in 2023 so far.

Combating gun violence has been foundational to Congressman Goldman’s work to make our communities safer. In August Congressman Goldman cosponsored a package of legislation that would establish a federal “red flag” program and strengthen state and local efforts to support the implementation of extreme risk protection order laws.

The Congressman also fought to close the Interstate Gun Sales Loophole, cosponsored the ‘End Gun Violence Act’ to prohibit individuals convicted of a violent misdemeanor from purchasing handguns or ammunition for five years after conviction, and called for a national 3-day waiting period on all handgun sales in the ‘COOL OFF’ Act.

Congressman Dan Goldman has also worked continuously to stop the unfettered flow of dangerous American-manufactured assault weapons abroad that arm cartels and fuel the devastating opioid epidemic. Earlier this month, Congressman Goldman called on the Commerce Department to address the troubling increase in assault weapons exports. In July, Congressman Goldman spoke in the United State House Committee on Homeland Security and condemned Republicans’ xenophobic attacks on migrants while they ignore the trafficking of American-manufactured guns across our southern border.

Congressman Goldman is a Vice Chair of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force and was recently named as Chair of the Dads Caucus Gun Violence Prevention Working Group.
