Task Force Designed to Stop Far-Right Government Takeover Outlined in Ultra Conservative Manifesto

Washington, DC – Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) today announced that he has joined the Stop Project 2025 Task Force. This Task Force was created as an effort to stop “Project 2025,” a far-right manifesto designed to gut checks and balances in an unprecedented power grab by extremists in service of Donald Trump. The Stop Project 2025 Task Force will serve as a central hub for pro-democracy Members of Congress, civil society, and affected communities to coordinate on examining, highlighting, preempting, and counteracting this right-wing plot to undermine democracy.

Project 2025 is a comprehensive plan for the next conservative president to swiftly enact the most anti-democratic and archconservative agenda in the history of this country. It lays the groundwork for Donald Trump to seize power, gut checks and balances, and enact a radical agenda. It touches on every department and agency within the federal government.

“Nearly four years after inciting an attack on the United States Capitol, Donald Trump and his followers remain the single-largest threat facing American Democracy,” Congressman Dan Goldman said. “Project 2025 is a dictator’s wish list, with comprehensive, sophisticated plans to march us straight into fascism and take away our freedoms. I am proud to stand alongside my colleagues on the Stop Project 2025 Task Force in this fight to preserve this nation as we know it. We must not allow for authoritarianism to take hold in the United States.”

The Heritage Foundation, a right-wing think tank funded by shady dark money interests, has been plotting Project 2025, an unprecedented scheme to help the next conservative president quickly enact the most radical agenda in the history of the country. The plan is laying the groundwork for a new president to seize power and enact broad changes that are deeply unpopular with the American people. This includes vastly expanding the ability of the president to purge civil servants who are not sufficiently loyal to this extreme right-wing agenda.

  • Within the first 180 days of taking office, the plan calls for attacks on reproductive rights, the rule of law, and the expansion of the cruel and inhumane immigration policies from the Trump administration. Project 2025 is a comprehensive plan that would touch every department of the federal government and fundamentally reshape the lives of the American people. The Project’s four-pronged strategy that includes:

    • A laundry list of extreme policies to be enacted across the federal government;

    • A blueprint for how to use existing authority – or expand the power of the presidency – to implement right-wing policy proposals;

    • A database of right-wing ideologues who wholeheartedly endorse this power grab and far-right policies;

    • Training for staff so they can more efficiently enact this extreme agenda.

While Project 2025 is being run out of the Heritage Foundation, its advisors include former Trump White House aides like Stephen Miller, and more than half the groups supporting the effort have received $21.5 million in funding from Leonard Leo’s dark money network.

The Stop Project 2025 Task Force is supported by many partner organizations, including leading civil society groups dedicated to the defense of democracy, good government, reproductive freedom, gender equality, LGBTQ+ rights, workers rights, and racial, economic, environmental, and social justice.

Congressman Dan Goldman remains committed to protecting American democracy from those who wish to undermine and destroy it.

Upon becoming a member of Congress, Congressman Goldman was chosen to sit on the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, where he serves as a bulwark against Republican overreach and politicized investigations designed to undermine President Biden and Democrats.

As his first bill in Congress, Goldman introduced the ‘Early Voting Act,’ which would require at least a 14-day window of in-person early voting for federal elections across the country. The bill would also require that election officials maximize polling place accessibility and would take steps to address unacceptably long wait-times forvoters in line to cast their ballots and for election results by mandating that election officials start processing and scanning ballots at least 14 days prior to Election Day.

In February of this year, the Congressman cosponsored the ‘Preventing Private Paramilitary Activity Act’ to protect citizens the from intimidation and mass mobilizations of paramilitary groups. This legislation would federally prohibit those in private paramilitary organizations from conducting activity with firearms.

Congressman Dan Goldman is a member of the House Task Force for Strengthening Democracy and served as Lead Counsel in the first impeachment of former President Donald Trump.
