Washington, D.C – Congressman Dan Goldman joined Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) and Congresswoman Cori Bush (MO-01) in introducing the ‘Abortion Justice Act,’ which would broadly expand access to abortion care and ensure every woman secures the reproductive health care she needs regardless of zip code, immigration status, income, or background. The legislation would mandate insurance coverage for abortion services and ensure that patients and doctors are not criminalized for providing or receiving abortion care.
“No one should be forced to carry a pregnancy to term simply because they lack financial resources,” Congressman Dan Goldman said. “Socioeconomic background must not ever be a barrier forwomen to exercise their reproductive freedoms. Marginalized and low-income communities already face worse healthcare outcomes, and a lack of abortion care access magnifies these disparities. By expanding insurance coverage and protecting patients we can ensure that reproductive health care is treated like the fundamental human right that it is.”
The ‘Abortion Justice Act’ would:
Require insurance coverage to cover abortion care
Protect patients and providers from criminalization
Affirm a legal right to abortion and miscarriage care
Call for necessary federal investments in abortion care, including training research, outreach, doula care, and innovation
Remove systemic barriers to care including for immigrant families
Address disparities and systemic racism in the healthcare system
Congressman Dan Goldman has made expanding access to abortion care central to his time in Congress.
Earlier this year, Congressman Goldman introduced the ‘Abortion Care Awareness Act,’ to increase access to medically accurate information about abortion, specifically medication abortion. This legislation would ensure people have access to accurate information about where and how to obtain abortion services across the country, how to avoid anti-abortion centers intended to deceive patients, and how to identify misinformation about abortion care.
Goldman also cosponsored the ‘Stop Anti-Abortion Disinformation (SAD) Act’ to stop crisis pregnancy centers organizations from using deceptive advertisements claiming to offer reproductive health care. The SAD Act would direct the Federal Trade Commission to prohibit unfair or deceptive advertising related to the provisions of abortion services and authorize the FTC to enforce these rules and collect penalties from organizations in violation.
In March of 2023, the Congressman cosponsored the ‘Women’s Health Protection Act,’ which establishes a federal right for healthcare professionals to provide abortion care and the right for their patients to receive care, free from bans and medically unnecessary restrictions that single out abortion care. The ‘Women’s Health Protection Act’ codifies and expands upon the rights established in Roe v. Wade.
Congressman Goldman is a member of the Pro-Choice Caucus.
