New York, NY – Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) yesterday hosted a virtual fireside chat with Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and moderated by Rebecca Fischer, Executive Director of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence. They discussed strategies that can be implemented at the federal, state, and local level to combat the gun violence epidemic, as well as answered questions from residents of NY-10. The fireside chat was the first of three events Congressman Goldman is hosting for his ‘NY-10 Alliance Against Gun Violence’ Event Series during National Gun Violence Survivors Week.

“So long as Republicans in Congress fail to listen to the will of the American people, it falls on us to work at the state and local level to protect our communities from gun violence,” Congressman Dan Goldman said. “Gun violence is now the leading cause of death for kids in America and our communities are scared. While I fight for commonsense gun laws in Congress, I’m also working with our state and local leaders to discuss ways we can keep New Yorkers safe. Tackling this critical issue will take leadership from all levels of government. Together, we will end the gun violence crisis.”

Congressman Goldman and District Attorney Alvin Bragg discussed the implementation of the historic ‘Bipartisan Safer Communities Act,’ how the mental health crisis contributes to gun violence in America, and how variance in gun safety legislation on a state-by-state basis can make it difficult for individual states to enforce their own laws. The participants also spoke about how New York’s strong gun safety laws can be a lesson for other states.

For National Gun Violence Survivors Week, Congressman Dan Goldman launched a ‘NY-10 Alliance Against Gun Violence’ series of events in communities across New York’s 10th Congressional District to discuss policy and law enforcement strategies, share resources, and leverage the experiences of survivors and the work local organizations are doing on the ground in New York to shape solutions to the gun violence epidemic.

Congressman Dan Goldman is fighting to pass the commonsense gun safety legislation that is supported by a majority of Americans.

In February, the Congressman cosponsored three commonsense solutions that would protect our communities from the scourge of gun violence. The ‘Assault Weapons Ban,’ which would have prohibited the weapons used in eight of the 10 deadliest mass shootings in recent American history, the ‘Bipartisan Background Checks Act’ supported by more than 90 percent of both Democrats and Republicans in America – which would require that every sale of a firearm include a background check, and ‘Ethan’s Law’ which would require gun owners to safely and securely store their firearms and establish strong penalties for violations.

Earlier this month, Goldman also signed on to the ‘Stop Online Ammunition Sales Act,’ which would place safeguards and limitations on the sale of ammunition over the internet and the ‘Default Proceed Sale Transparency Act’ to address the 'Charleston Loophole,’ which allows some gun sales to be completed without a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) background check.

He also joined House Democrats in signing a discharge petition that would force the Republican House Leadership to allow a vote on the ‘Keep Americans Safe Act’ on the House floor. In the 118th Congress, House Republicans have not let a single piece of bipartisan gun safety legislation come to a vote.

Congressman Goldman is a Vice Chair of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force and is Chair of the Dads Caucus Gun Violence Prevention Working Group.
