Washington, DC – Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) joined Congressman Maxwell Frost (FL-10) in introducing the ‘Office of Gun Violence Prevention Act,’ which would re-establish the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention (OGVP) after President Trump dismantled it less than 24 hours after taking office.

“Gun violence is a public health crisis regardless of who occupies the White House, and Donald Trump’s decision to eliminate a White House Office dedicated to solving it within a day of taking office betrays the thousands of families who have seen a loved one’s life cut short,” Congressman Dan Goldman said. “Our communities are desperate for the commonsense policies needed to prevent senseless gun deaths, and I will continue fighting tooth and nail alongside my colleagues to ensure the OGVP becomes a reality once more.”

OGVP was established by President Biden in September 2023 to effectively implement gun safety policies as well as find additional actions to curb gun violence.

Since its creation, the OGVP has helped hundreds of Americans and countless communities by offering the first-ever federal response to mass shootings and gun violence, responding to crises when they happen and connecting local governments and municipalities with resources to help victims and survivors. The OGVP also played a key role in implementing the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act and getting federal grant money to communities in need.

Congressman Goldman is committed to protecting our children, families, and communities from the gun violence epidemic.

In June 2024, the Congressman cosponsored the ‘Preventing Pretrial Gun Purchases Act’ to address vulnerabilities within the federal background check system. The legislation would keep firearms out of the hands of individuals that courts determine pose a risk of harm to others.

In August 2023, Goldman cosponsored a package of legislation that both establishes a federal “red flag” program and strengthens state and local efforts to support the implementation of extreme risk protection order laws and the ‘End Gun Violence Act’ to prohibit individuals convicted of a violent misdemeanor from purchasing handguns or ammunition for five years after conviction.

Additionally, Goldman supports the ‘Gun Trafficker Detection Act’ which would require gun owners to report if their privately-owned gun is lost or stolen within 48 hours and help law enforcement identify potential gun traffickers.

Congressman Goldman is a Vice Chair of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force and is Chair of the Dads Caucus Gun Violence Prevention Working Group
