New York, NY – Congressman Dan Goldman (NY-10) and New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams yesterday hosted a roundtable discussion with 13 community-based organizations to discuss how federal and local government can better support the organizations in leading the charge in the fight against gun violence in New York.

Representatives from Everytown for Gun Safety and Brady United Against Gun Violence also attended the roundtable to serve as a resource for organizations fighting against gun violence locally.

“As Republicans continue to obstruct common sense gun safety legislation at the federal level, community organizations in New York City are doing the work to make our neighborhoods safer,” Congressman Dan Goldman said. “Our community-based organizations are on the frontlines of the fight against gun violence, working tirelessly to stop tragedy before it occurs. These organizations are doing incredible work and the least we owe them is the support and resources they need to continue serving their communities.”

Community organizations in attendance include:

  • Avenues for Justice
  • Exalt
  • Vera Institute of Justice
  • Henry Street Settlement
  • Grand Street Settlement
  • University Settlement
  • Red Hook Initiative
  • Lower East Side Girls Club
  • Dorill Initiative
  • Her Justice
  • Center for Family Life in Sunset Park
  • Red Hook Community Justice Center
  • The Center for Court Innovation
  • Community Capacity Development
  • God Squad of the 67th Precinct Clergy Council, Inc.

The conversation centered around a variety of policy needs that the community organizations highlighted, including the importance of investing in community intervention programs, as well as the need for additional funding to help provide trauma informed resources. The organizations also stressed the need for policy that would address the root causes of gun violence and the need to invest in our neighborhoods.

For National Gun Violence Survivors Week, Congressman Dan Goldman launched a ‘NY-10 Alliance Against Gun Violence’ series of events in communities across New York’s 10th Congressional District.

On Tuesday, Congressman Goldman hosted a Gun Violence Prevention Virtual ‘Fireside Chat’ with Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and Rebecca Fischer, Executive Director of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence. The three answered questions from NY-10 constituents and discussed the policy and legal work being done at both the city and federal level to combat the scourge of gun violence.

On Wednesday, Congressman Goldman and Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso hosted a Gun Violence Survivors Roundtable with New York gun violence survivors and several New York City Councilmembers. The survivors focused on the human impact of gun violence and the solutions they would like to see implemented at the local and federal level. Congressman Goldman also shared resources available to survivors and families and highlighted the work of local organizations leading the fight against gun violence.

Congressman Dan Goldman is fighting to pass the commonsense gun safety legislation that is supported by a majority of Americans.

In February, the Congressman cosponsored three commonsense solutions that would protect our communities from the scourge of gun violence. The ‘Assault Weapons Ban,’ which would have prohibited the weapons used in eight of the 10 deadliest mass shootings in recent American history, the ‘Bipartisan Background Checks Act’ supported by more than 90 percent of both Democrats and Republicans in America – which would require that every sale of a firearm include a background check, and ‘Ethan’s Law’ which would require gun owners to safely and securely store their firearms and establish strong penalties for violations.

Earlier this month, Goldman also signed on to the ‘Stop Online Ammunition Sales Act,’ which would place safeguards and limitations on the sale of ammunition over the internet and the ‘Default Proceed Sale Transparency Act’ to address the 'Charleston Loophole,’ which allows some gun sales to be completed without a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) background check.

He also joined House Democrats in signing a discharge petition that would force the Republican House Leadership to allow a vote on the ‘Keep Americans Safe Act’ on the House floor. In the 118th Congress, House Republicans have not let a single piece of bipartisan gun safety legislation come to a vote.

Congressman Goldman is a Vice Chair of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force and is Chair of the Dads Caucus Gun Violence Prevention Working Group.
